' Great Eastern Train Ferry set up in 1923 using some equipment from the military train ferry services established from 1917 to take supplies by train and ship to the front. The Ferry could be 'Train Ferry No.1" or 2 or 3, as they all looked the same and the name is on the stern under the link span. No. 1 was scrapped in 1957, while 2 and 3 were snack in 1940 and 1945 respectively. The service to Zeebrugge competed with the shorter service from Dover to Dunkirk, both eventually ceasing with the arrival of the Channel Tunnel. Unlike the Dover service, which carried the Night Ferry sleeping cars, the Harwich service was freight only. '
