There is an argument that Bedford Circus could and should have been saved by the city council but there is no doubt that the prevailing view in most bomb damaged towns after the war was to clear away the old and replace with what we now regard as bland soul-less modernity.
It should also be remembered that after five years of rubble and destruction Exonians just wanted to get back to a relatively normal life with shops etc. '
