' St.Mary's Cathedral is considered to be one of the most beautiful Gothic-Revival Cathedrals in Europe. The Gothic style was chosen because the sharp points and graceful curves would blend with the surrounding mountains. The building was designed by the famous English architect, AW Pugin, and was started in 1842, only for construction work to be stalled by the Great Hunger from 1845. The Cathedral was finally consecrated on 22 August 1855, although work was not completed until 1912, when the nave was extended and the 285-ft spire added. '
