' Hoo Fort, built on an island in the Medway and completed in 1871. It, with its neighbour Darnet Fort, formed part of the inner defences on the approaches to Chatham Dockyard. Hoo Fort was armed with eleven 9 inch rifled muzzle loading guns. The fort was decommissioned before the First World War. During the Second World War, there was an observation post on its roof for spotting naval mines.
