' The moat. The rectory was once a semi-fortified building reputed to have had a draw bridge and loop holes for the discharge of weapons. Part of the moat can clearly be seen on this image. Medieval glass, now in the clerestory and Flodden window of St Leonard's church came from the rectory. Coats of arms are the subject of these glass panels. I believe that, with this and the fortification, the rectory was formerly Middleton's manor house. Probably when the Assheton family became lords of Middleton, they built their new manor house between what is now Market Place, Old Hall St and Tesco. '
