Multi occupancy Victorian/Edwardian House that was home to four families, Some on the council waiting list. Lived there as a young child from 1954 until 1959 before family moved to Reservoir road in Oakwood. The park entrance was opposite, that lead to the yatchting lake that would be packed at the week ends with enthusiastic adult racers competing each other with their model sailing yachts. In the middle of the park 16th century Broomfield house with itsnatural history museum and active bee colony that could be watched through a glass sided box with a glass & wood channel the outside that the bees would enter or leave. The cafe at rear for tea and cakes at tables on the patio overlooking mowed lawns in a victorian garden walled setting. Two futher large ponds swathed in horticultural plants and reeds with ducks and swans. A roofed wooden bandstand partially set into the pond edge with musicians playing to crowds in their hired deck chairs on the neat lawns. A glass pavillion full of exotic plants. Loads of playground swings, seesaws, slides and merry go rounds (concrete floors then no soft carpet). Best of all being chased by the park keeper for being naughty!!
How parks used to be and enjoyed particularly in summer by children and adults alike..The house was demolished sometime around the late 70's early 80's but not fI have not forgotton all the good times I had there. |
