St. Woolos Cemetery, Bassaleg Road entrance. St Woolos Cemetery, Newport is notable for being the first public cemetery in Great Britain. The fourteen acre site now contained within the present cemetery, formerly farmland worked primarily by the tenants of Cefn-Perfedd Farm, was purchased from Lord Tredegar in February 1854. Before 1854 there were no public cemeteries in Great Britain. A private cemetery at Kensal Green, London, was opened in 1837 followed shortly by Highgate Cemetery, London 1n 1839. '
