' Lower Lee Street. Lower Lee Street is a remnant of Lee Street. 50, Lee Street was the birthplace in 1862 of Joseph Merrick, the “Elephant Man”. Lee Street was an area of dense slum housing and most of it can be seen to have been cleared by the time of the 1947 aerial survey of this area. Most of the former Lee Street lies under Lee Circle, with the multi-storey car park at its centre. '
