Winter Gardens. Opened 14 July 1927. Neo Georgian Style. Refurbished 1989. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip visited in 2007. There is a large ballroom at the Winter Gardens. Owned by Weston College since May 2016. Land compulsory purchased by Urban District Council in 1922 (Roger's Field). Work for Winter Gardens began in 1923. Putting green, alpine garden and tennis courts. Alpine garden removed 1964. Tennis courts removed 1989 as part of the redevelopment of the Winter Gardens. Putting green and the rest of the garden became a car park in 1990. It became the town garden in 1992. Now town square, 2017. Roger's Field was used as allotments during World War I (from 1916) '
