It turns out that Swailes Limited was a manufacturer of paper tubes, cones, and bobbins for the textile industry and had factories in Oldham and Rochdale.

I am interested in finding out more about Swails Mill, Molesworth Street, Rochdale where my Father was billeted for a time during the War in 1942. I am assuming it was a textile mill. Can anyone assist with this query?

The Manor Mill still survives today but the Kent Mill has been demolished. The Hawthorn Mill went around 1972.

This was an ill-fated artificial silk mill. I stumbled on the image and was interested in the name. A couple of Google searches later I had found some of its history which I have attached to the image.

Sorry about the last comment, the narrow end of the pond is indeed a canal, but after a few hundred yards alas it is no more. Plenty of clues though, 'The Moorings' with nowhere to moor just past the end the water that's left. All the remnants have been filled in and given over to walkways

Sorry to disappoint you but the 'canal' is the sluice from the mill dam. Google has a picture and comment. Regards Stan

Many industrial town images from the air feature textile mills. Some are quite impressive and are seen at work, often in the 1920s. The Argyll Mill shown in the group header was where my grand father was mill engineer until the early 1960s in charge of the mill's mighty steam engines (built by George Saxon of Openshaw).
