The Brixton Tabernacle, old building, now Stockwell Skate Park. The church has been meeting in a new building across the road since 1975.

This bit of the site looked as if it had been a tennis club or something similiar in pre war days., I remember there were two burnt out railway carriages that has probably been used as club houses. Impossible to spot in the photo. .

Wiltshire road. This section still exists

Wiltshire Road. This section vanished when the area was redeveloped in the 1970s. It is now completely unrecognisable.

These pre-fabs, and the others close by were Nissan Hut shape. Built by U.S.Army 1944/45. All demolished in 1953/54

Overton Road, not the same one that exists today. Whats left of it is now Five Ways Road

Meux's Brewery Co Ltd, Horsehoe Brewery, 41 Nine Elms Lane, Vauxhall. Brewery purchased in 1841 by John Mills Thorne and eventually names Thorne Brothers Ltd. Taken over my Meux Brewery Co in 1914. Closed 1964.

Knowle Road.

Brixton Independent Church, bomb damaged. Refurbished in the 1950s and now a RC church

Could be an ex S.E.& C.R. Class C 0-6-0 tender engine.

Hammertons Brewery My father worked there before he enlisted (WW2) and on his return 1946!

Huge bomb damage site between Barrington Road & St James Crescent. Known by all the kids in the area as'Fairyland' It was a fantastic playground, a complete wasteland with derelict houses and piles of rubble, quite dangerous but nobody worried about such things in those days, The area was redeveloped in the mid 1950s.

Durand Gardens. At the time of this photo rents probably averaged about £1 a week. Now 'very much gentrified'.

Tramway change pit, in the middle of the road. Trams switched from conduit to overhead (and V.V.)electrical supply. There was another change pit in Brixton by the Orange Coach Station in Effra Road.

Villa Road

Bomb damaged Hero of Switzerland pub. I fell partly down the dumb waiter lift shaft, no serious injury but my mother was none too pleased.

Brixton Fire Station

Bombed site by Five Ways Corner. Unexploded bomb found in 1951 when they started rebuilding. I attended Loughborough Central School opposite and we were sent home at lunchtime.
