 Does anyone know anything about this big motor launch? She must have been one of the first passenger-carrying motor boats to operate from the Foreshore. maybe built by the local Boatbuilder Hayward? Enquiring minds would like to know. |

It looks as though this picture happens to show the evidence of Southend's first two motor launches operating as pleasure-boats, one [looks like it might have a varnished hull], at the jetty alongside the Pier Pavilion and a smaller, white one further to the east. Cook's Boatyard at Maldon had built a 40ft launch named "Grace Darling" for G. Gundy during 1919 [replacing his earlier sailing yawl of the same name, lost during the Great War] that was delivered at the start of 1920, to operate from the beach near the Kursaal, selling trips for holidaymakers. Cook's Boatyard History states that Hayward of Southend was also building a motor launch for a Southend Company at the sdame time. |
