Tanks crossing the bridge during World War II did considerable damage to the structure, which was built in 1851. It was closed in 1963 a temporary bailey bridge provided. Victoria Bridge was subsequently rebuilt under the supervision of Mott, Hay & Anderson - now part of the Mott MacDonald Group. The main span was replaced and the bridge was re-opened in 1967. The resident engineer was Robin Anderson, later the RE on the new London Bridge, another Thames Crossing. A little more detail here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Bridge,_Datchet |
