This is new to me: I always understood that leather was dried in the dark - usually on a upper floor of a tannery with louvred windows shuttered down - to prevent discolouration. No doubt someone will explain ... |

The white objects drying are parchments. The area was well know for both tanneries and parchment making. |

This area is well known for its parchment is I would assume these are the limed skins drying. |
