Either 3:55 or 11:20 showing on clock face. I think 11:20 from shadow. Photo taken from South West. That may be technique they devised from practice (WW1?). |

It was splendid to have the opportunity to visit Uplyme, to see the subject of this photograph on the ground. As you can see from the present day photographs not much has changed. There is new development in the surrounding area but it is not much in evidence in my photos. I would imagine that the village school is as popular as ever but I wonder how the narrow roads cope when most children are ferried to school by car. If you are in the area the location is worth a visit, even on a cold February day. |

Thanks RichardW, this has been a puzzler for too long... We'll update the catalogue and post your correct location data here in due course. You may be interested to know that the original Aerofilms Ltd Register entry for this image reads "?". Yours, Katy Britain from Above Cataloguing Team Leader |

I am so pleased to know the location of this photo which has eluded us since June. Thank you RichardW for getting this one. Everything fits for Uplyme. The fenestration of the church is right. Mrs Ethelston's Church of England Primary School next door fits. |

Dear all, This one is a puzzler, hopefully someone will recognise the church eventually. The most recently-suggested grid-reference that puts this in Carlisle can't be substantiated so until anyone has a better suggestion... Yours, Katy Britain from Above Cataloguing Team Leader |

It looks a little like Tankersley Church, Tankersley Lane, Tankersley, South Yorkshire, United Kingdom |

Hi Des, I had a look at Tankersley, thanks for the suggestion. According to the Ordnance Survey, the church is more removed from the adjacent buildings than in this photo. Yours, Katy Britain from Above Cataloguing Team Leader |

Wrong stone for Cumberland especially Carlisle, red sandstone is the most used. |

Definitely not Tankersley Church, which has bell louvres at the top of the tower instead of a clock. |

Why is this identified as Botchergate, Carlisle? It's nothing like. |

Does look too rural to be anywhere along Botchergate, doesn't it? But I don't have an alternative suggestion - any other ideas? |

Given the east - west orientation of most churches the picture was taken from S of SE.... therefore 11.20 would seem about right! |

Disagree ! The roofs are totally different for a start. There is a lot more open space around the church in this photo. More.... |

Church with tower (crenellated) Farm next door may be manor house. Primary school next to church. Light coloured stone buildings - Cotswolds or similar? |
