The brewery was run by the Blatch family from 1854 to 1966. Most of the buildings were then demolished |

Its location on the main road to London may explain the large number of public houses in the village. Apparently seven still survive today, including the Red Lion, The Bull, The Falcon and The Crown |

Sadly, there are now only five pubs in Theale itself. The Lamb, in Church Street, closed a few years ago as did The Thatcher's in North Street. The Fox and Hounds in Sunnyside, about a mile outside Theale on the other side of the canal, is open and seems to be doing well. The "Kings Head, Jack's Booth" on the A4 towards Thatcham is now called the Spring Inn after an unsuccessful period as an Irish-themed fish restaurant. |

Theale High Street formed part of the A4 Trunk Road from London to Bristol until the M4 Motorway was built. Yet it seems relatively quiet in this shot, merely featuring a double-decker bus - possibly quite a new model? |
