Mill Lane which leads to Victoria Rd west in Hebburn. Often called 'the Waterworks Rd' in years gone by.

This is where the Tennant's Chemical Co were from 1865ish.

Hawthorn Leslies

This land eventually was built on by the Council. In 1952 Windermere Cres, Grasmere Rd, Thirlmere Court and Coniston Ave were built here.

The Reay Gear Works which was originally the Platers Sheds for the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co who went bankrupt. In later years it was taken over and became Geo Angus Gear Works. Eventually it became RW Transmissions. It finally closed in the 1970s and a new housing estate stands on the land now called Tyne View Est. This was called 'The Island Lake' but I can't see the Island on this 1937 view so maybe it was created afterwards. In my day late 40s into the 50s the Island was overgrown with bushes/shrubs/trees and swans and ducks nested there.

This was called 'The second Lake'. It once had a Boathouse that the Ellison family had built. They were the lords of the manor and lived in Hebburn Hall (Ellison Hall). In the 40s and 50s the boathouse had gone and all that remained were timbers sticking out of the lake bed. Photo of it on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website

This was locally known as 'Sandy Bottom' lake and where the children fell through the ice in the late 50s. This was the reason the lakes were drained.

This bridge over the railway line to Sunderland was what locals called 'Spuggies Bridge'

This was a right of way, but not sure if it still exists in 2015

Prince Consort Rd formerly James St.

The long gone Tharsis Sulpher & Copper works. The copper ore came from their own Copper Mine in Huelva (Spain)

Jutland Ave which runs from Victoria Rd East to Campbell Park Rd. The marker pin I placed on the photo is at the junction with Mons Ave which also runs to Campbell Park Rd.

Hebburn's 4 lakes separated from each other by earth embankments. They were drained in the late 50s after a few children drowned when they fell through the ice

This was an old Quarry, south of Leslies sports field. Part of it was water filled, deep and dangerous because the water couldn't be seen. It had a coating of cork type dust on the surface which looked solid. We knew this as kids cos when you threw a stone the surface broke & you saw the water & then it was quickly hidden again.People did drown in it apparently

In the 50s this building belonged to a Coach Company called 'Hall Brothers' where their buses were kept & maintained.

St Cuthbert's Vicarage which was well away from the smoke & fumes of Industrial Hebburn. The Vicar had to be kept healthy lol

Monkton Village

Elmfield Tce known as 'Sinkers Row'. It was built to house the men who sunk the shaft for the Monkton Colliery.

Monkton Coke Works

Monkton Colliery . The sinking of the shaft was started by Wallsend & Hebburn Coal Co about 1920. It was closed in 1925 for some reason.
