' Grain Fort: I can't find any details of the date the fort was constructed, nor of its armament. The OS six inch to the mile map of 1869 (http://maps.nls.uk/view/102343471 ) shows in the top left at Grain Common, a triangular structure that may have been an older military installation. This does not appear on any subsequent maps and features of the area are not shown until 1933 (http://maps.nls.uk/view/101428254)which indicates that the area was considered militarily sensitive. The 1933 and 1944 map editions show gun emplacements for Wing Battery and Dummy Battery, but none for Grain Fort. Is it possible that Grain Fort acted as a barracks for these two adjacent batteries, and perhaps also for Grain Tower?
