East-West route of the former Manchester and Leeds Railway, opened to Bury and on to Bolton in 1848. Became part of the 'East Lancaster Railway' which became part of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway and then the L&NWR railway and so on to the LMS and BR. Closed 1966 as part of the 'Beeching Cuts'. The line eastwards forms part of the East Lancashire heritage railway. '
