Location of 'Metropole Cinema'...originally 'The New Star Theatre of Varieties', opening in 1883, altered and extended and reopening in 1886 as 'The Queen's Theatre and Opera House'. Early 1900s renamed 'Metropole Theatre' under new management and became a cinema in 1911. ABC took it over in 1929 and by an independent operator in 1938. Clifton Cinemas took over in 1939, closed when hit twice, by bombing, in 1941 causing extensive damage. Demolished in 1952 and an Art Deco style hotel built in 1953, later becoming the YMCA, and a homeless hostel. Now 'The Snow Hill' '
