Colliery waste heaps, known locally as "pit tips" or, occasionally, "slag heaps". The vertical columns carried continuous wires bearing tippers full of colliery waste which tipped their contents as they moved. The tip shown here rose to near the tops of the columns by the1960s. Similar arrangements where commonplace in British collieries. One features in the closing sequence of the film "Get Carter". '
