Wigg Island was known as Randle Works during WW2.
A Ministry of Supply Factory (MOSF) it manufactured vesicant chemicals such as mustard gas (a viscous liquid) and stored it in 5 ton 'pots' buried in the ground.
Randle also had filling (charging) facilities to fill vesicants into aerial bombs and dispensers and artillery shells.
Bulk vesicants were shipped by rail tanker to Valley Works in Rhydymwyn, North Wales for storage and filling there. '
