' This is the old Western Avenue between Uxbridge and Denham. Started before WW2, it was only half completed, i.e. with one carriageway over the long bridge. This was not completed for many years afterwards, and ultimately became the A40 linked directly into the M40. This long bridge was required to take the road over the Rivers Colne and Pinn, as well as the Grand Union Canal and the branch railway from Denham to Uxbridge (long closed). The view is looking up the Western Avenue towards Hillingdon, Northolt and ultimately London.I knew this stretch intimately as a child/youth in the 40s and 50s. '
