Clare Hall, built and used as a residence by a number of prominent individuals and families, perhaps most notable being J.H. Whitley who became M.P. for Halifax and later Speaker of the House of Commons.
Mr. Whitley became a notable local philanthropist and donated Clare Hall to be the local YMCA HQ which it still was when this photo was taken.
The Halifax Swimming Pool was built on this site in the 1960s. '
