The Science & Art Institute.
The Mayor, William Kirkpatrick appealed for funds to erect a building to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and the Science & Art Institute was the result. It was opened on Monday 24th September 1888 by Sir Charles Forster Bart, M.P. and not by the principal of the project, William Kirkpatrick, as he died shortly before its opening. Vincent Kirkpatrick, William's son, took over the project and the running of the family business in Frederick Street which is still in business today (2014). The photo shows the front and back of the medal which was struck to commemorate the opening in 1888. '
