This image shows the Enfield Royal Small Arms factory, once the largest factory in Europe. It began in 1812 using water mill power making muskets and swords and made Lee Enfield rifles, Bren light machine guns and Sten sub-machine guns in World War 2. The factory closed in 1984 and the site was turned over to housing in 1997 and later named Enfield Island Village. Some of the original factory buildings remain having been converted for dwellings. |
