The footbridge seen in this photo was a temporary erection to give additional access to the Festival of Britain site. When the railway bridge was built in the early 1860s to serve Charing Cross station, opened in 1864, it replaced a former footbridge*, and the South-Eastern Railway were compelled to put a replacement footbridge attached to the railway bridge. The permanent footbridge was on the North or downstream side of the railway bridge, the opposite side to the photographer. It was replaced by the new footbridges in 2002. *To a design by the noted Isambard Kingdom Brunel. |
