On the old map of 1884-1891 this is shown as the 'CABLE TRAMWAY DEPOT'. It is little known that Birmingham, prior to the trams, had 'CABLE' tramways, same as the ones in use in SAN FRANCISCO, USA. One line went along COLMORE ROW, down SNOW HILL (the road running down the other side of SNOW HILL railway station parallel to LIVERY STREET), along GT HAMPTON ST to the HOCKLEY BRIDGE Depot. The then city boundary was just north of Whitmore St...Handsworth not being amalgamated with Birmingham until 1911. 'CABLE TRAMS' do NOT have their own method of propulsion but grip a continuously running cable, in a below ground channel, driven from the Depot Winding House. So no electric gantry etc. but have a 'groove' between the rail tracks. |

| This property was built circa 1865 as a "Grocers and Tea Merchants" shop. Until 1882, when the direction of numbering was reversed, it was recorded as No 377 Park Road but, post 1882, it became No 274 Park Road. A succession of some 10 No proprietors traded as grocers, tea and provisions merchants until 1912 when Ellen Rice took it over to run it as a "Pawnbrokers". This continued until 1940/41 when, for short time, a May Alexander operated from it as a "Wardrobe Director" (second hand clothes ?). Late in 1942 its commercial use stopped and it was taken as private domestic rented property which continued until 1966/67 when it was demolished in the major clearance work of that time. |

 Soho House - the home of Matthew Boulton from 1766 until is death in 1809. Boulton, an industrialist, was a member of The Lunar Society and meetings were sometimes held at Soho House. Other members include Erasmus Darwin, James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood and other industrialists, natural philosophers and intellectuals of the time |

| Soho Pool Wharf was originally the parkland around Matthew Boultons factory (the "Manufactory" built circa 1766 and demolished circa 1859). Pools in park were fed by Hockley Brook which was also used for powering the factory until its conversion to steam power with the involvement of James Watt. With the growth of the railways the pools were filled in and it became a railway wharf/sidings |

Gib Heath is a very old and little used location name. The image is centred on Hockley with Soho on middle right, Winson Green at the top from a position above Lozells |
