Bristol Road, following the course of the Roman built Icknield Street, It runs off the right of the photograph and through Birmingham City Centre (now almost impossible to follow its original route). The Bristol Road through Selly Oak had a by-pass built in 2010 which splits from the original road at the very right of the image and passes just to the left of this point where the Ariel Factory once stood and under a newly built aqueduct |

The Birmingham Battery and Metal Company relocated here from their premises in Digbeth, now occupied by the Institute. The company didn't make batteries, they 'battered' metal into shape. This historic building has recently been demolished by the neighbouring supermarket. |

This was Selly Oak fire station. The building, and all of those behind it are now wasteland and a used car lot but the ouline of the building, with its stables for the horses that pulled the steam fire engine are still there. Just off the bottom of the photo to the left stood the premises of the Carter car company that built cars there just before the First World War. |

On this site Patrick Motors produced cars, initially in collaboration with the Jensen Brothers and later on their own. Both the coachbuilding shop and the last remnants of the Ariel works in Dale Road were demolished recently to make way for a by-pass. |

The Ariel Works. For a time this works was known as 'Componentsville' and was reckoned to be the biggest manufacturer of cycle component in the world. From these works the Ariel,Ariel-Simplex and Lorraine-Dietrich cars were produced between 1900 and 1911. |

I hope place names added into comments enter the Gazetteer! We have Selly Oak (B29) in the foreground, Bournbrook to the right, and, in the background, Harborne (B17) left and Edgbaston (B19) right. Detailed study of the Harborne sector would show the house where we have lived since 1969 (built in the 1880s). Main transport links are the A38 (Bristol Road), the Lichfield-NewStreet-Redditch railway line (between the University and Selly Oak stations), and the Worcestershire and Birmingham Canal. The photo shows the canal, winter 2012, from the A38 bridge, looking northish (roughly towards the university). |
