In 1916 the lake in St James park was drained and the starnge oblong shapes here are actually govermnet buildings, built to house the huge numbers of civil servants needed to run the war! |

Where the present day lake is in St James' Park there seems to be some sort of man made structure I can't quite make out. Also another structure in the Park halfway down on the right of The Mall (looking towards Admiralty Arch) which isn't there today. Anyone know what these are? |

Hi I have 2 maps of this area dated 1869 & 1916 and both of them show clearly the lake and nothing else. The only thing I can think it might be is something to do with the First World War! Maybe temporary barracks?? I'll keep investigating! |

have now found the answer to your query. The lake has been drained and the oblong shapes are temporary offices for civil servants. This link should help! Copy and paste into your browser! http://greatwarlondon.wordpress.com/2012/02/01/buildings-in-st-jamess-park-a-horrid-offensive-eyesore/ |
