I'm Bill. I was a clerk in the Sales & Service Department of the Wandsworth & District Gas Company offices at 299 High Street- just behind the gas holder in this picture. We became South Eastern Gas Board (West Surrey Division) circa 1949. In the photo I spotted straight away All Saints Benhilton- atop Angel Hill. I cycled past it each day, through the cutting and on to Rose Hill, where I lived- in Reigate Avenue. I left there 1963, to train at The national College for the Training of Youth Leaders. I also spotted St Nicholas Church, just off the High Street from Shinners Department store. The church to the right with the unusual tower/spire is Trinity Methodist. Being born and bred on the St Helier Estate in 1932, Sutton was my local town, and there I bought my first record at the age of 143- Jimmy Shand and his Band- "Dashing White Sergeant!" Happy memories! |

Dear Mark1973, That’s great; we’ve reviewed your comments and thanks to your help we can update the catalogue with Sutton. The revised record will appear here in due course. Hope you have the same success solving some of our other mysteries! Katy Whitaker Britain from Above Cataloguer |
