The tramp steamer Mary P Cooper sank about here in March 1961, following a head-on collision with the SS Foamville. What an appropriate name, given the state of the Mersey and Irwell at that time. Fortunately, the crew were rescued unharmed, thanks in part to a policeman patrolling on the road to the right, and the fact that the youth of that time weren't in the habit of removing lifebelts for fun. |
