Portland Bill Lighthouse
The first Trinity House lighthouse was erected by William Johns, a Weymouth builder, in 1789.
It replaced two earlier and badly operated lighthouses which operated after 1716, and were reported in 1752 to not be lit until two hours after sunset. One of these was demolished in 1789.
Two new lighthouses were built further back than the present lighthouse in 1869.
The present single lighthouse was built in 1906 with a height of 41 metres and can be seen 25 miles away. It was converted to automatic operation in 1996 and it is operated from Harwich.
To the South of the lighthouse is a seven metre obelisk marking a shelf of rock which extends 30 metres into the sea. |
