Formed in 1866 The Alexandra Palace Company Ltd erected a large exhibition building to be known as The Alexandra Palace - after Princess Alexandra of Denmark who was later to marry the future Edward VII. The shell of the building was completed in 1866 but the money ran out. Completed in 1873, opening on the 24th May, but unfortunately only 16 days later on the 9th June was destroyed by fire leaving only the walls standing. Once again money was found and the Palace opened a second time on 1st May 1875, with a fine organ, a concert hall able to seat 3,500, and a theatre for 3,000. |
