Victoria Dock in 2011. |
John Swain |
Monday 30th of September 2013 07:11:56 PM |
Victoria Dock was first opened in 1840 as part of the regeneration of the Old Harbour at Hartlepool (Headland), and the first timber cargo was unloaded here, five years after the first coal (Thornley Colliery)exports left the port. A new Fish Quay was added in 1910 and Victoria Dock became tidal again with the removal of the dock gates. Despite the decline in coal, timber and shipbuilding in the post-war era, Victoria Dock and Middleton have retained some their former industrial heritage, as indicated by the series of floating cranes and the extensive ship repair and scrap yards! |
