A rare glimpse of the original electric stock of the 1908 Midland Railway electrfication of the Lancaster Morecmabe and Heysham electrification at 6.6Kv, 25Hz. This is one of the three sets. The 60' long motor coach with a cab at each end is seen on the left hand end of the train (2 supplied by Siemens and one fitted with Westinghouse components) were built at Derby in 1907. The two shorter coaches are driving trailers that could be driven in multiple with the motor coach. It is too far away to see which of the three sets it is, but they were smashing units with a reliability of 99.63%! In 1951 they were all withdrawn and scrapped. I have a driving handle and ignition key from one, possibly even this! From 1951 to 1956 the LMH service was push pull operated by steam, until it was re-electrified at 6.6Kv at 50Hz and new stock provided. The service ended on 1st January 1966. This section of line, having opened in 1848, closed on 5th June 1967 when White Lund gas siding ceased rail deliveries.
