This is Southern Venturer (15,300-ton), which was, like Southern Harvester, its sister ship also shown here, a whaling factory ship owned by Leith-based Christian Salvesen. In the 1950s they worked in the South Atlantic and used to be annual visitors to the Tyne, for overhaul at Middle Docks in Shields. The Southern Venturer was broken up in the mid-1960s, and the Southern Harvester in 1971. You can make out their names on the sterns, above the ramps used to take on the whales. |
