These Slipways or Berths were created by the Newcastle Shipbuilding Company in 1919 but unfortunately they went bankrupt in 1921. Their Platers Sheds which are not in the photo were eventually taken over by the Reay Gear Works. Photos on my website showing the gear works who eventually became RW Transmissions and closed in the 1970s |

The Ballast Hill in Hebburn. Vessels couldn't come empty to collect their cargo eg coal so had to have ballast to stabilise the vessel at sea hence sand/gravel as ballast. There were lots of Ballast hills along the riverside created by the emptying of the ballast ready for the cargo. |
