My mother and I used to change trains here in the early 1950s on our way from Ashtead to Streatham Hill to visit her father, my only living grandparent. While this ranks amongst my earliest memories, it may seems to be of little importance. However, it does reflect a changing society were shorter life expectance and in my case an extended generation gap (increased by my parents marrying late - 30 plus - and on the 2nd September 1939 and delaying a family until the war was nearly over in 1945) meant less likelihood for many children having contact with their grandparents. |
