I lived in this upstairs Flat from being a baby in 1944 to when we left about 1953. The address was 14 Lyon St. When this photo was taken we were living there then. No hot water in the house just a cold water tap. The toilet was down the rear stairs & down to the bottom of the backyard. That's me as a little 2yr old at our front door. |

These sheds & the land down to the river once belonged to the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co who started off in 1919 & went bankrupt two years later. The Sheds were bought at the end of the 1920s by a Gateshead Company called Reay & the 'Reay Gear Works' started up in Hebburn. Years later it was taken over by George Angus & Co Ltd as their Gear Division. Later it was bought by RW Transmissions who ran the gear making company until closing in the mid 1970s. |

The Ballast Hill. In the old days, to stop empty boats coming to collect coal from being unstable at sea they used sand/gravel to weigh the vessel down in the water. This was known as ballast. Today's ships use water which can be pumped in & out easily. So when a boat arrived for our coal, the ballast had to be dumped first hence Ballast Hills being created along the riverside close to the coal staiths. |

This area was known locally as 'The Bauxite'. Not a lot is recorded about this 'British Aluminium Co' apart from it produced Aluminium Hydroxide from the ore known as 'Bauxite'. A lot of waste known as red mud was a by-product of the process & it was dumped on the site producing hillocks/mounds of this red mud. It was fenced off to keep people off it. |
