This is the old Gravesend Labour Exchange on the Overcliffe. I remember going there in, I think, 1970, to get a one year visitor's passport for a school trip. A visitor's passport was a pinkish, three fold card document, probably about foolscap size if unfolded. I don't think that they were recognised World-wide, but were sufficient for Western Europe. |

Slaves Alley - this was a row of fifteen tiny dwellings at the foot of the cliff behind Pier Road, as shown on the 1909 25" to 1 mile OS map. Query, were these acquired by Imperial Paper Mills Ltd when it acquired the Bycliffes estate? Were they part of the Bycliffes estate? |

This lodge was the gatehouse for Bycliffes, a large house set back from the Thames with extensive grounds running south to the base of the Overcliffe. It was owned by William Fletcher. The house and grounds were acquired by the Imperial Paper Mills Ltd, incorporated in 1910 with its address Bycliffs (sic) Gravesend. Horse and cart in Burch Road. Shadows indicate the time to be about mid-day so rather late for a milkman: a rag and bone man perhaps? |

One of the IPM's fireless locomotives. This is evidenced by its shadow showing a dome for steam but no chimney at the front of the loco. |
