The nearer vessel seems to be a bottom-discharge self-propelled barge for taking mud dredged by the bucket dredger. They were owned by the James Shipping and Contracting Co. of Southampton, later taken over by Westminster Dredging. James' boats livery was pretty much the colour of silt, with white and black funnels.
