Effingham Street was partly destroyed in WWII bombing and was subsequently completely demolished for the construction of the western end of Churchill Gardens. The street no longer exists but it lay at the rear of Sullivan House. Gilbert House was constructed across its route near Lupus Street.

While the present Chelsea Bridge was under construction in preparation for its opening in 1936, this temporary bridge provided a limited crossing facility slightly downstream
