I asked people in the port what this structure was. They were unable to find any records / plans related to it. By 1928 (building of new Locks) the structure was gone. Judging by what appears to be water to the far right of it in the picture, I am wondering if someone was trying to dig out what became the longest 'branch' (built 1962-9) of the docks. |

Known locally as "The Hairpin bridge". |

For many years the Hairpin Bridge was the main route to cross the railway from the "town" side, taking heavy loads etc. Since the 1980's (and probably before that) the bridge has been declared unsafe for motor vehicles and only pedestrian traffic has been allowed on it. |
