This vessel is actually the Cunard liner Samaria, which was launched from Slip 6, the southernmost one in the yard, on 27th November 1920. The Manistee was built on Slip 5 and was launched on 28th October, but is hidden in this view behind the bulk of the liner. |

1920 was the year the Fullagar was built at Cammel Lairds. It was the worlds first fully welded vessel. It was 150ft long but I think the vessel in this picture looks bigger than that. There's a picture here. .. http://www.topfoto.co.uk/imageflows/preview/t=topfoto&f=EU003767 but that is dated Feb 1920 and it looks finished whereas the picture here clearly shows scaffolding. The other thing I find interesting is that this is 5 years before work started on the Queensway Tunnel. |
