Ham & Bacon Factory. In the 1970's it was the site of 'Rex Bedding' which burned down. The blaze could be seen for miles.

This looks like it might be a funeral procession with horse drawn carriages.

That's a good guess The Laird, but I think it is just 'everyday' traffic. There is a similar scene in Pinner Road, near the Roxborough Arms.

Still think it's a funeral. The front carriage looks like a hearse. All three carriages are drawn by pairs (unusual) and it's right next to what used to be Massey's Funeral Directors.

The Roxborough Hotel which on 24 July 1908 witnessed the American winner, Johnny Hayes, of the 1908 Olympics' marathon race from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium crossing Roxborough Bridge in Harrow. 44 years later I used to watch the trains from this point - on my own!

It became a very 'Irish' pub in the '70s, to the extent that you used to get guys coming round rattling tins, collecting for 'the cause'.

For a town the size of Harrow, there isn't much left in the way of old school purpose-built boozers. Just the Royal Oak left really (I don't count the kind of cocktail bars that pop up from time to time in old retail premises.) Same with Wealdstone. All gone.

The long large building to the right of Bessboroough Road is the Methodist Church. The white building with the porch below it later became a synagogue

I'm intrigued why title is unlocated; NGR reference is correct, albeit the road layout has changed (now a roundabout with two bridges over the railway). View is looking approx NNE. Harrow-on-the-Hill station is just off the right top corner of the picture.

Hi mapmal,

I can explain - if you put a pin on the map to suggest a location for an otherwise Unlocated image, the NGR and place details are automatically generated. But the title/caption remains "unlocated" until there is enough evidence to confirm the identification. Once the catalogue is updated, the rest of the newly-corrected details can be uploaded to the website!

Dear all,

That’s great; we’ve reviewed your comments and thanks to your help we can update the catalogue to Harrow. The revised record will appear here in due course. Hope you have the same success solving some of our other mysteries!

This photo shows the junction of Bessborough Road and Lowlands Road to the bottom of the picture under the Metropolitan Railway Line and the roads the other side are College Road to the right and Pinner Road to the left.

The Roxborough Hotel stood on the junction of College Road and Pinner Road.

This junction is much altered but remained much the same until the early 1970s

This is a view looking down Bessborugh road towards the Metropolitan line between Harrow on the Hill (to the right) and North towards Uxbridge and Watford (to the left). The road layout has changed in recent years as the bridge shown now has roundabouts before and after it. The building directly over from the bridge was the Roxborough Arms, now demolished along with the row of shops leading to the right. For many years the rightmost of these housed Odeon Radio and the name lives on in the name of the new building - Odeon House. You can just make out the tower on the roof.

I do not know the name of the large building standing forsquare in front of the bridge. It's now the site of the Middlesex Synagogue.

The aircraft is heading towards St Mary's church and Harrow School. The photgraph entitled 'Harrow-on-the-Hill Railway Station and environs, Harrow, 1927' is looking across the station and down the train line to this bridge.

Image EPW018759 shows a similar view but clearly taken some years later as the bushes on the railway embankment have grown much larger

The rest of the flight is Bristol but this looks like Harrow where Bessborough Road crosses the Metropolitan Line just west of Harrow on the Hill Station
