The Wouldham Cement Plant. Founded in 1874 and expanded rapidly from 1898, it was acquired by BPCM in 1911. The five "Wouldham Woodbines" (five stacks serving six kilns!) are smoking away, and since the much larger kilns 7,8 and 9 were also operational, April 1927 must have been a busy period. Kilns 1-6 were finally decommissioned when Kiln 10 was installed in January 1930. Kiln 11 was installed in 1937, bringing the plant capacity to around 500,000 tonnes a year. The plant shut down in 1976. The old chamber kilns are still in place, although they have lost their roofs. |
