... over the river mersey AND the Manchester Ship Canal. For Seangerard's info - both bridges have long gone and is now a single "coathanger" bridge although another road bridge is proposed. A transporter bridge picks up vehicles in a cabin on one side of the river and "transports" them to the other side suspended between the gantry you can see. |

The railway bridge is still there and in use. Only the transporter bridge has gone. |

Ray(T) the transporter bridge is long gone, replaced in 1961, but the railway bridge is still there alongside the Silver Jubilee Bridge which is a mini 'Sydney Harbour style' road bridge. |

There's another transporter bridge nearby in the middle of Warrington. It's unused and in poor condition though. |

In 1959 I drove my Post Office Telephones green van across the transporter from Widnes to Runcorn for telephone maintenance every day. I had to be the first on the car with an ICI tanker behind me. I used to have my lunch break in Runcorn so that I could sedate my nerves from the trauma in the pub! I was later promoted to Widnes telephone exchange about 1960 and I saw the new road bridge being built and when the job was finished we got a new cleaner who had just finished a few years rowing the safety boat on the Mersey every day downstream of the bridge. |

Could anyone tell me what a transporter bridge is ? Never seen his design of bridge before. Is it still there ? Is it still in use ? |
