Site of "Croydon Central" / "Central Croydon" station, closed in 1890. This was off a very short spur from the East Croydon-Brighton line, not far from East Croydon itself. By this time, the station had been closed for 38 years, but most of the route is still visible in this photo.
The station site itself is now occupied by the Town Hall and Queen's Gardens. The Fairfield Halls occupy the original approach cuttings to the east, roughly where the route curves to join the Brighton Main Line. |

The pin is a little off; it's on the approaches to the station. The station itself was in the block near the Clock Tower. |

The building Is (was 1940 onwardss) the home of the Croydon Town Hall and Whitgift libary, the town hall gardens just above the location was reputedly the site of the first "vacuum railway" in which the carriages were sucked along tunnels by extracting air. Further beyond the site indicated as the old railway location was a car park until the Croydon technical colledge and Fairfields Hall were built on the site. |
