Durham Pathways History Group have been studying the Britain from Above photographs of the World Heritage Site in Durham.

They have photographed the buildings on Palace Green as they are today, including the Cathedral and the Castle.

The group has found out about all the buildings on Palace Green, when they were first built, what they are used for today, and what they have been used for in the past.

Here are our photos and some information about each building.

We have arranged the photos of the buildings in date order, starting with the oldest buildings.

We have also added some of the Britain From Above pictures showing the buildings. Can you spot them?

I met some of our community engagement project participants today. History enthusiasts at Durham Pathways Day Centre turned out to be pretty good photographers, too. Watch this space for some of their photos taken during a trip to Durham's beautiful world heritage site in the heart of the city.

When is the last time you visited? We are keen to see your photos and hear about your memories of the Cathedral and the complex around Palace Green.

In 1975 I was working for United buses which ran 2.5 metre wide buses up and down Silver Street which in places is only about 3 metres wide. Following a public enquiry the bus service was unable to continue running through this busy and narrow city street.

The side of the Castle facing the river is covered with scaffolding and a chute for spoil runs down to the lowewr level path, in connection with the massive works to underpin the historic building to prevent its slipping into the Wear. The work was partly funded by an international appeal and continued well into the Thirties.
